Stop Wasting Your Money: 5 Motorcycle Maintenance Myths Debunked

22 Apr 2026

The Difference Between Garage Talk and Real Engineering

Bad advice costs money. At the Xpert Moto workshop, we often see bikes that have been worked on using "old school" habits that just don't apply to modern machines.

If you want your bike to last, you need to know the facts. Here is the reality behind the five most common myths we hear in the shop.

1. High Octane Fuel is Always Better

High octane fuel (like 98) isn't "stronger" or "cleaner" fuel. It is simply designed for high-performance engines so the fuel doesn't explode too early. If your bike was built to run on 91 or 95, putting 98 in the tank won't give you any extra power. In some smaller engines, it can actually cause soot to build up on your valves.

  • The Fact: Use the fuel listed in your manual. Anything more is a waste of money.

2. You Need to Let the Bike Sit and Warm Up

Modern bikes use fuel injection and don't need to sit idling for ten minutes. In fact, letting a bike sit still for too long can make it get too hot and can foul your spark plugs.

  • The Fact: Give the oil 30 seconds to start moving, then start riding gently. The engine warms up better and safer while you are actually moving.

3. Black Oil is Dirty Oil

Oil is designed to "trap" dirt and soot so they don't stick to your engine parts. If your oil turns dark, it means it is doing its job. You cannot tell if oil is "worn out" just by looking at the color.

  • The Fact: Follow the service schedule. Change it based on the kilometers you've ridden or the time that has passed, not the color.

4. Wait Until the Brakes Feel "Soft" to Change the Fluid

Brake fluid acts like a sponge and sucks in moisture from the air. By the time your brakes feel "soft" or "spongy," that water has already lowered the boiling point of your fluid. This can lead to your brakes failing when they get hot and can rust your ABS system from the inside.

  • The Fact: Change your brake fluid every 2 years no matter how much you ride.

5. WD-40 is a Good Chain Lube

WD-40 is a cleaner, not a lubricant. While it is great for getting dirt off, it is too thin to actually protect your chain at high speeds. It can also ruin the small rubber rings (O-rings) that keep the grease inside your chain.

  • The Fact: Use a real chain spray or ask us about an automatic oiler.
