Rider Intelligence

Did You Know?

Everything Sydney riders should know about keeping their bike safe, reliable, and road-ready.

  • Most bikes need a full service every 6 months or 6,000km — whichever comes first, regardless of how often you ride.
  • Chain lubrication should be done every 500–800km, and more frequently during Sydney's wet season when grime builds up faster.
  • Engine oil degrades over time even if the bike sits unused — time matters as much as distance. An oil change is due at least once a year.
  • Coolant and brake fluid should be flushed every 2 years regardless of kilometres — both absorb moisture and lose effectiveness silently.
  • Spark plugs on most modern bikes are due at 12,000–24,000km — a worn plug hurts fuel economy and cold-start performance noticeably.
A basic service ($150–$250) prevents failures that routinely cost $1,000–$3,000+ to repair.
  • Worn brake pads left too long damage rotors — a $60 pad replacement becomes a $350–$500 rotor job.
  • A snapped chain from poor maintenance can crack the engine casing — repair bills of $500–$2,000 are common.
  • Running old coolant leads to overheating — head gasket failure is one of the most expensive motorcycle repairs at $800–$2,500.
  • A full service history adds $500–$1,500 to resale value — buyers pay a premium for a well-maintained bike with paperwork to prove it.
  • Insurance claims from mechanical failures caused by negligence are often rejected — regular servicing protects your cover.
  • Motorcycle tyres have a 5-year expiry date from manufacture, regardless of how much tread remains — the rubber compounds harden and crack risk increases.
  • Under-inflated tyres in Sydney's 40°C+ summer heat are a genuine blowout risk — check PSI weekly during summer months.
  • Sport and naked bike tyres typically last 5,000–10,000km — less if you corner hard or ride two-up regularly.
  • Rear tyres wear 2–3x faster than front tyres due to drive force — budget for rear replacements more often.
  • Tyre date codes are moulded on the sidewall — the last 4 digits show week and year of manufacture (e.g. 2423 = week 24 of 2023). Ask us to check yours.
  • Sydney's coastal salt air accelerates corrosion — chains, exposed bolts, brake calipers, and footpegs need more frequent inspection than inland bikes.
  • Stop-start CBD and inner-suburb riding wears brakes 30–40% faster than highway riding — commuters should check pads every 5,000km.
  • Sydney's summer heat stresses cooling systems — riders should check coolant level and condition before the November–March period.
  • The wet season increases chain rust significantly — apply a quality chain wax (not just oil) before extended wet weather riding.
  • Sydney's notorious speed humps and road patches affect suspension over time — if your bike feels bouncy or sits lower than usual, have the suspension checked.
  • Sintered brake pads — significantly better wet weather stopping versus standard OEM organic pads. A worthwhile safety upgrade for Sydney commuters.
  • Handlebar grips with vibration dampening — reduces hand fatigue on longer rides, especially noticeable on older single-cylinder or V-twin engines.
  • Gel seat inserts or aftermarket seats — a practical comfort upgrade for daily commuters doing 30+ minutes each way in Sydney traffic.
  • USB / USB-C charging port — hard-wired to the battery, keeps your phone charged for GPS navigation without draining it mid-ride.
  • Heated grips — Sydney winters are mild but early morning rides can drop to 5–8°C in the western suburbs. A small investment that makes a big difference.
  • Scottoiler or automatic chain oiler — eliminates manual chain maintenance entirely. Pays for itself in chain and sprocket longevity within 12 months.
